Thomas Jeffrey Hanks (born July 9, 1956) is an American actor and film director. Popular for his dramatic and comedic performances, he is considered to be one of the most popular and recognizable film stars worldwide and is considered an American iconic cultural figure. Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born in Concord, California, to Janet Marylyn a hospital worker and Amos Mefford Hanks, an chef who traveled the world. His mother's family, which was originally known as "Fraga", was entirely Portuguese and his father was of mostly English descent. Tom was born into what he described as a "fractured" family. He did not have any acting experience in college. This is what helped him begin his acting career. He was an auditioner in downtown Cleveland for a community theater production. After that, he was invited to Cleveland by the director. This was the point where his acting career started.
